Saladin Citadel – Cairo's medieval fortress
The Citadel of Saladin is one of Cairo's most important historic landmarks. It stands on a high spur of the Mokattam Hills, overlooking the city. Construction began in 1176 under Sultan Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi, known in Europe as Saladin. Initially designed to defend Cairo from attack, the fortress later became a residence for Egypt's rulers and a major centre of government.
History of the fortress
Construction continued after Saladin's death, and Sultan al-Kamil made the citadel his residence in the early 13th century. Ayyubid, Mamluk and Ottoman rulers expanded and modified the complex over the centuries. In the 19th century, Muhammad Ali Pasha added major buildings and made the citadel an important seat of his dynasty. The rulers' official residence moved to Abdeen Palace in the mid-19th century.
Muhammad Ali Mosque
The citadel's best-known monument is the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, also called the Alabaster Mosque. Built mainly between 1830 and the late 1840s, it follows Ottoman architectural traditions. Its central dome, surrounding semi-domes and twin minarets dominate Cairo's skyline. The mosque contains Muhammad Ali Pasha's tomb, while its terraces offer impressive views over the city.
Medieval mosques
The Mosque of Sultan al-Nasir Muhammad was built in 1318 and served as a royal mosque for the Mamluk rulers. Its open courtyard and decorative features reflect medieval Islamic architecture. The Mosque of Sulayman Pasha, built in 1528, is an important early example of Ottoman mosque architecture in Egypt.
Joseph's Well and Al-Gawhara Palace
Joseph's Well is an engineering feature carved deep into the rock to supply the fortress with water. Its design helped raise water from considerable depth. Al-Gawhara Palace, built in 1814, was used for official receptions and to accommodate guests of Muhammad Ali Pasha.
Museums and views of Cairo
The citadel contains the Military Museum, the National Police Museum and the Royal Carriages Museum, along with other historic exhibitions. From its elevated terraces, visitors can see the rooftops, mosques and minarets of historic Cairo. The site combines military history, religious architecture and panoramic city views.
