History of the Valley of Roses
It is believed that the Damascus rose was brought to Bulgaria in the 13th century from Persia. Planted in the area of Kazan, under the influence of a specific climate and soils, a new unique variety — Kazan oil rose was bred.
Historically, the Valley of Roses is located south of the Balkan Mountains, here is the most favorable climate. Winters are short and soft, snow falls little. The rest of the seasons are predominantly wet, but without abundance. There is just so much heat and light here that pink bushes would be comfortable. To grow roses in large volumes, for the production of oil began at the end of the 16th century. Over time, the area and scale of production grew. Bulgarian rose oil is widely known in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The production was family, several more successful surnames of Shipkov, Kidov and Bonchev were distinguished.
By the beginning of World War I, pink plantations occupied an area of over 90,000 hectares. After the war, less than a third of these wealth remains. After World War II, it was decided to restore the Valley of Roses and oil production. In the middle of the 20th century, the Rosa Institute was created, various varieties were cultivated here. Later, a museum was opened, today it is possible to get acquainted with ancient methods of oil production.
