Trekking in Nepal Checklist: What to Pack
Treks in Nepal, for example to Everest Base Camp or around Annapurna, follow trails with big changes in altitude and quickly shifting weather. A well-packed backpack makes the journey noticeably easier. Here is a basic list.
Documents and Money
- Your passport and copies of documents kept separately from the originals
- Insurance that covers trekking at altitude (check the terms in advance)
- Cash in local currency: ATMs are rare in the mountains
Clothing
- A warm layer: fleece or a light down jacket
- Waterproof jacket and trousers
- Thermal underwear and several pairs of warm socks

Gear
- Trekking boots that are already broken in
- A backpack with a rain cover
- A headlamp and spare batteries
- Trekking poles that take the load off your knees

Health and Safety
- A first-aid kit with plasters and remedies for pain and stomach upsets
- Water purification tablets or a filter
- Sunglasses and high-protection sunscreen
- Do not rush your ascent and include rest days; talk to a doctor about altitude sickness risk and medication

Important: rules, trekking permits, seasons and trail conditions change. Check current information on official websites and with licensed operators before your trip.
What You Can Leave at Home
- Extra clothes "just in case"
- Heavy books and expensive jewelry
- Lots of gadgets: they are hard to charge in the mountains
Bottom Line
A light, well-thought-out backpack matters more than "the best of everything". Take what you need, check conditions, and do not rush in the mountains.
