The Nha Trang Institute of Oceanography is one of the largest institutes located in Vietnam. He started working during the period of the French colonial Empire. The institution is actively engaged in research activities. There is a museum with a wide collection of exhibits that were brought from different countries.
History of creation
The center was founded in 1922 at the suggestion of Dr. Alexander Yersen. Initially, it was planned that the researchers would study the flora and fauna of the South China Sea. Over time, the institute was recognized as one of the leading centers of tropical oceanographic research in Southeast Asia.
In 1969, management passed to the University of Saigon, and then the institution became part of the Vietnamese Academy of Sciences and Technology. The name was changed several times, and in 1993 it was officially renamed the Institute of Oceanography in Nha Trang. In 2012, it was entered into the Vietnam Book of Records as the institution with the largest collection of marine exhibits. In 2022 The Institute of Oceanography in Nha Trang was awarded the First Degree Labor Medal.

In addition to the Institute of Oceanography, Nha Trang has one of the largest oceanography museums, which is visited by travelers from all over the world. The number of exhibits in the museum exceeds 60 thousand. These include both the living inhabitants of aquariums, as well as geological materials, skeletons and stuffed animals. The most famous exhibit is the 18‑meter skeleton of a humpback whale.
How to get
The Nha Trang Institute of Oceanography can be reached by public transport. Bus number 3 runs along TrầN Phú Street, 10-12 minutes on foot from the stop to the destination. You can use taxi services or rent a transport. There is paid parking at the entrance. You should also pay attention to the fact that many sightseeing tours in Nha Trang include a visit to the institute.
