Hong Moon Island is one of the most popular islands for divers and lovers of sea adventures. This picturesque, world-famous place is located next to the popular Nha Trang resort. Up to 300,000 people visit it annually. Vietnamese residents say that it is best to come here during the dry season, which begins in April and ends in July. At this time, the weather is mostly sunny, the sea is calm, and the water is clear.
History
The name of Hong Moon Island translates as "black tree". This reflects the contrast of the black cliffs towering in the southeast. Sheer cliffs against turquoise water create spectacular landscapes. Due to this, the territory was given another name – the Aquarium of Southeast Asia.
Hong Moon Island used to be an important place for fishermen who came here for a rich catch. This is due to the fact that coral reefs and rocky areas created conditions for fish and other marine organisms. In addition, the dark rocks and coastline provided natural shelter from waves and wind, which is especially valuable for fishing boats. In addition, the prominent rocks helped to navigate and determine the location.
Description
Hong Moon Island is popular with divers and snorkelers because of the transparency of the water and the rich marine system. There are more than 350 species of hard corals here. In general, the underwater world is represented by 1.5 thousand marine organisms.
During the dive, you can meet:
- butterfly fish;
- parrot fish
- moray eels;
- cuttlefish;
- starfish;
- sea urchins;
- nudibranchs.
Biological diversity was preserved because in the late 1990s, scientists drew attention to the fact that the ecosystem was under threat due to intensive fishing and the growing tourist flow. In 2001, Hong Moon Island became the first marine reserve in Vietnam.
How to get
Hong Moon Island is located 10 kilometers off the coast of Nha Trang. There are no scheduled boats, so you need to rent a boat yourself or join the tour. Previously, boats departed from the port of Kau Da, after its closure, flights depart from the port of Vinh Truong.
