The 171-meter-high "Reunion Tower" observation tower is part of the Hyatt Regency Hotel complex. Thanks to the carefully thought-out design, the thin tower looks taller than it actually is. The structure is on the list of the 20 tallest buildings in Dallas, it is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Texas.
History of creation
The Reunion Tower was built as part of a Dallas renovation project. The Reunion Tower was designed to attract the attention of travelers to the city and to develop tourism. It is located on Reunion Boulevard in the district of the same name, which was named after the commune of the middle of the 19th century. The facility was designed by Welton Becket Architectural Firm & Associates.
The tower was completed in 1978, and one of the first companies to open an office here was KOAX-FM radio station, which was later renamed KRLD-FM. It is not used as a broadcasting tower. The Reunion Tower was temporarily closed for repairs in 2013 in honor of the 35th anniversary of the landmark, now it is working. That year, a new LED lighting system was installed, allowing for more dynamic light shows than before.
Short description
The Reunion Tower is open near the place where US President John F. Kennedy was wounded. The upper 3 floors of the building are supported by concrete pillars. They are placed in an open-air sphere, which is why the locals nicknamed it the "ball". The geodesic dome is formed by aluminum pillars, each of the intersections of the pillars is blocked by aluminum circles with lanterns in the center. At night, the observation tower is illuminated by 259 diode elements.
The GeO-Deck observation deck, which can be reached by elevator in 1 minute and 8 seconds, has 2 interactive Halo displays that can simultaneously receive up to 30 users. It features a variety of content, including 3D models, shots of Dallas landmarks, gigapixel panoramas, and HD camera controls to explore the city. Telescopes with panoramic views of the city are also installed in this place. A rotating restaurant is open above, which also offers a panoramic view. The establishment completes a full rotation every 55 minutes. At the base of the Reunion Tower there is a shop with a large selection of souvenirs.
How to get
Parking is provided for visitors, so visitors often come here by private or rented car. Nearby is the Union Station railway station, where Amtrak trains and high-speed trams arrive. You can take a taxi from anywhere in Dallas.
The Reunion Tower welcomes guests every day except Christmas. It is usually open to visitors from Sunday to Thursday from 10.30 to 21.00, on Friday and Saturday the facility closes a little later at 22.00. Admission is free for children under 3 years old accompanied by adults. It is recommended to check the current schedule immediately before the visit, as changes may be made to it.
