The Dallas Museum of Art is called the cultural pearl of Texas. In this place, you can get acquainted with decorative art objects collected from all over the world. There are more than 25,000 exhibits in the permanent collection. Admission is free, only pre-registration is required. Additional fees may be required to attend some exhibitions.
History of creation
The idea of opening a Dallas Art Museum was discussed in society, it was supported by artist Frank Rea and the first president of the city's Public Library, Mae Dixon Exall. They wanted to have a permanent art gallery in Dallas where locals and tourists could come. The city's Art Association founded the museum in 1903.
At first, the paintings were kept in the library, and in 1909 the permanent collection was transferred to the city. After that, the art samples were transported to the Dallas Art Gallery. In 1936, the institution moved to an Art Deco building in Fair Park. In 1963, the collection expanded through a merger with the Dallas Museum of Modern Art. In 1984, the Dallas Museum of Art began operating in the arts district, the building was designed by New York architect Edward Larrabee Barnes.

The Dallas Museum of Art features art from the Americas and other countries. The collection includes approximately 25,000 exhibits, some of them dating back to the 3rd millennium BC.
Temporary exhibitions dedicated to the works of famous and emerging artists and case studies are also held. The Dallas Museum of Art has a library with 50,000+ volumes of books available to the general public. It is not uncommon to meet students and teachers here. Literary and performing concerts, themed evenings and children's educational programs are organized for visitors.
Museum collections
- West and Central Africa mainly covers the XVI–XX centuries. The earliest item in the collection is the bust of Nok from Nigeria, which, according to experts, could have been created in the period from 200 BC to 200 AD. Some of the works describe symbols of power, while others describe the life cycle.
- America is represented by graphic works and sculptures created in the country from the colonial period to the Second World War. Here you can also look at art objects from Canada and Mexico. The paintings "Duck Island", "Icebergs", "That Gentleman" are popular.
- The Ancient Mediterranean collection consists of Apulian, Cycladic, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Etruscan objects. The marble figure of a man with a funerary relief from 300 BC, decorative items and gold jewelry attract great attention.
- Asia covers the II–IV centuries of our era and the period of XV–XIX centuries, there are many objects of Buddhist art. Also among the exhibits are an image of the god Vishnu of the 10th century, a statue of Shiva Nataraja of the 12th century.
- The modern collection describes the artistic trends that appeared after 1945. There are objects created in the style of abstract expressionism, minimalism, pop art, op art, and video art. The collection includes works by Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Bruce Noman, Franz Kline and other artists.
How to get
The nearest station is St. Paul, through which the red, blue, green and orange lines of the DART system pass. The Dallas Museum of Art is about a 6-minute walk from this station. Buses No239, 306, 378 are also suitable. If it is more convenient to travel by car, you should pay attention to the fact that an underground garage with 400 seats is open to visitors.
