Millennium Tower is one of Vienna's most recognizable skyscrapers, located on the banks of the Danube in the city's 20th district, Brigittenau. Together with the Millennium City shopping and entertainment complex, it forms a modern mixed-use destination combining offices, shops, restaurants and leisure facilities. The tower reaches 202 metres including its antenna and has 50 floors.
History of construction
Millennium Tower was built between 1997 and 1999. The project was designed by a team of architects consisting of Gustav Peichl, Boris Podrecca and Rudolf Weber. The skyscraper was conceived as the centrepiece of a new urban complex bringing together business facilities and places to relax. Completed in 1999, the tower became a prominent feature of Vienna's skyline.
When it appeared, Millennium Tower stood out among buildings in the Austrian capital for its height and contemporary design. It was considered Vienna's tallest building until DC Tower 1 was completed. The architectural concept focused not only on visual impact but also on making the interior spaces adaptable to different uses.
Millennium Tower architecture
The tower's defining feature is its composition of two interlocking cylindrical forms with fully glazed facades. Its unusual shape resembles two vertical structures joined together. The glass exterior reflects the sky and surrounding cityscape, giving the building a changing appearance depending on the light and weather.
The interior is used primarily for offices. The architects designed workspaces to benefit from natural daylight and allowed floor layouts to be adapted to the needs of different companies. Official complex information lists approximately 43,000 square metres of office space. The tower is an example of Vienna's modern commercial architecture at the end of the 20th century.
Millennium City beside the tower
The skyscraper forms part of Millennium City, a mixed-use development based on the idea of a city within a city. The complex includes shops, cafés, restaurants, a cinema and various entertainment venues. This combination makes the area suitable not only for business meetings but also for shopping, dining and leisure activities.
The location beside the Danube gives the complex a distinctive atmosphere. Nearby Danube Island is a popular place for walking, sports and outdoor recreation. A visit to Millennium City can therefore be combined with a riverside stroll and a look at the contemporary architecture of northern Vienna.
How to get to Millennium Tower
Millennium Tower is located at Handelskai 94–96, 1200 Vienna, in the Brigittenau district. One of the easiest ways to reach it is by public transport to Handelskai station, served by underground line U6 and urban railway services. The complex is only a few minutes' walk from the station.
The tower is primarily an office building, so access to working areas may be restricted. Visitors can use the public areas and businesses within Millennium City. Before travelling, check the official complex website for current opening hours for shops, the cinema and other facilities.
