Ebru: how patterns move from water to paper

In the ebru technique, paints first form a pattern on the surface of the prepared liquid, and then the image is transferred to paper. The result depends on the materials, the movement of the tool and the experience of the master.

Tradition and materials

UNESCO classifies ebru as an intangible cultural heritage of Turkey. In traditional practice, craftsmen work with pigments and prepared liquid, creating a variety of patterns.

From pattern to print

Colors are applied to the surface and the pattern is carefully modified using special tools. Then a sheet of paper comes into contact with the surface and takes on the pattern. Each print turns out differently, even if you use similar colors.

Getting to know the craft

The master class will help you see the individual stages and try the material under the guidance of a teacher. Specify in advance the language of the lesson, the cost and drying time of the work. A visit to a workshop also provides an opportunity to ask how skills are passed on from master to apprentice.
