Registan in Samarkand: a closer look at the square
Registan is often recognized by its blue facades and large arched entrances. But the square is more interesting if you look at it not as one postcard, but as an ensemble of buildings created at different times.

Square and its surroundings
Registan is part of historical Samarkand, which UNESCO describes as a crossroads of cultures. There are three madrasahs here: Ulugbek, Sherdor and Tillya-Kari. Their facades face the square, but despite the overall composition, each building has its own character.

What to pay attention to
Compare the proportions of arches and towers, the rhythm of decorative niches and repeating geometric patterns. Then look at the courtyards: the transition from an open area to a more intimate space helps to understand the structure of the madrasah.
How to plan your visit
Leave time for both the general appearance and the details. Individual building hours and entry conditions may vary, so please check before traveling. On a hot day, water and a hat will come in handy; Treat decorative surfaces with care.
