Coconut Tree Hill is one of the best-known natural landmarks on Sri Lanka's southern coast. Located near the resort town of Mirissa, it is a small reddish headland covered with tall coconut palms. The leaning trees overlooking the Indian Ocean and the coastal panorama have made it one of the island's most photographed spots.
Location
The hill lies in the Bandaramulla area near Mirissa on Sri Lanka's southern coast. This small headland rises beside the Indian Ocean and can usually be reached on foot from the central part of the resort in around 10–15 minutes.
What Makes the Hill Famous
The defining feature is a cluster of tall coconut palms growing near the edge of the headland. Their curved trunks stand out against the sky and ocean. The reddish soil contrasts with green leaves and blue sea, while the viewpoint offers broad views over Mirissa Bay and the southern coastline.
Best Time to Visit
Early morning and the hour before sunset are ideal, when softer light gives the palms and coastline warm colours. Sunset is popular and often busy, while mornings are usually quieter. During monsoon periods, rain, clouds and rough seas may affect the experience.
How to Get There
From central Mirissa, the hill is generally a 10–15-minute walk. Part of the route follows local streets; when the sea is calm, visitors may also walk along the beach. Travellers coming from Weligama or Matara can reach Mirissa by bus, car or tuk-tuk and continue on foot.
Nearby Attractions
Nearby places include Mirissa Beach, Parrot Rock and Secret Beach. Mirissa Fisheries Harbour is also worth a stop for a glimpse of fishing boats and everyday coastal life. These sites can easily be combined into one coastal outing.
Photography Tips
The palms create a natural frame for the ocean, making the hill suitable for panoramic views and silhouette photographs. The light is usually softest in the morning and before sunset. The viewpoint can become crowded during peak hours, so be considerate of other visitors and avoid occupying a photo spot for too long.
Safety and Responsible Visiting
This is a natural headland rather than a purpose-built viewing platform. Some areas have no barriers, so keep away from the edge and supervise children. The ground may be slippery after rain. Do not leave litter, damage plants or disregard private property. Check local access conditions before visiting.
