ZOOM Children's Museum is an interactive museum in Vienna's MuseumsQuartier, where children discover science, art, architecture and everyday culture through play and experimentation. Visitors can touch objects, explore unusual structures, create their own projects and take part in workshops. The museum offers programmes for children from infancy to age 14.
History of ZOOM
The museum was founded in 1994, when interactive learning for children was still a relatively new approach in Austria. Initially, it did not have a permanent venue and organised temporary exhibitions and educational events. In 2001, it moved to Vienna's MuseumsQuartier, gaining space to develop its creative and play-based programmes.
The museum encourages children to explore the world for themselves, ask questions, test ideas and learn through interaction rather than simply receiving information.
What to see at ZOOM Children's Museum
ZOOM Ocean
ZOOM Ocean is a play and discovery area for children from around 8 months to 6 years old. Young visitors explore a colourful ocean-inspired environment through movement, sound and touch. The area includes underwater-themed features and a ship's deck for imaginative play. Activities support coordination, creativity and social development.
ZOOM Studio
The art studio is designed for children aged approximately 3 to 12. With guidance from workshop leaders, they experiment with materials and artistic techniques, drawing, building, modelling and creating their own works. The emphasis is on the creative process as much as on the finished result.
ZOOM Animation Studio
The animation studio welcomes children and teenagers aged 8 to 14. Participants explore animation and try roles such as scriptwriter, camera operator, editor and sound designer. Using multimedia equipment, they can create short animated films and sound projects. Previous technical experience is generally not required.
ZOOM Hands-on Exhibition
The interactive exhibition area is primarily intended for children aged 6 to 12. Changing exhibitions introduce topics from science, art, architecture and everyday life. Children engage with interactive stations, investigate objects and learn through practical activities rather than simply looking at displays.
Getting to ZOOM
The museum is located at Museumsplatz 1, 1070 Vienna, in the MuseumsQuartier. Nearby underground stations include Museumsquartier on line U2 and Volkstheater on line U3. Several tram and bus stops are also within walking distance. Its central location makes it easy to combine a visit with a stroll through the MuseumsQuartier and central Vienna.
Tickets and planning your visit
Each programme has a fixed starting time and a limited number of places. It is recommended to choose a session and book tickets in advance through the museum's official website. Prices depend on the programme, and schedules may change, so check the latest details before visiting.
ZOOM Children's Museum is an engaging attraction for families in Vienna. It turns learning into play and introduces children to art, science and technology through hands-on experiences, making it a particularly good option for a family outing on a rainy day.
