The Vienna Snow Globe Manufactory is a family business in Hernals, Vienna’s 17th district. For generations, the family has handcrafted famous glass snow globes featuring miniature landmarks, animals and festive scenes. A small museum on the premises introduces visitors to the history of this unusual souvenir, displays historic examples and explains how the globes are made.
The history of the snow globe
The manufactory’s story is linked to Erwin Perzy I, who was experimenting with lighting around 1900. During his experiments, he noticed that tiny particles in a water-filled glass sphere drifted slowly to the bottom, resembling falling snow. This effect inspired him to create a miniature scene inside a globe. One of the earliest designs featured the basilica in Mariazell.
The business developed into a family enterprise, and its range gradually expanded. Christmas trees, snowmen, Santa Claus, animals and famous Viennese landmarks became popular motifs. The manufactory still operates in Vienna, and its products continue to be made by hand.
How snow globes are made
Each globe contains a glass sphere filled with water and a special mixture that creates the effect of falling snow. The exact recipe is a family secret. Miniature figures and bases are made with careful attention to detail, and some designs can be produced to order.
Popular scenes include St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the Vienna Giant Ferris Wheel, animals, good-luck symbols and winter settings. The collection combines traditional souvenirs with unusual contemporary designs.
Museum and shop
The small museum displays historic snow globes, special designs and a workshop associated with the early days of the family business. The exhibition explains how the globes are produced and how their motifs have changed over time. The adjoining shop offers a wide selection of globes to buy as souvenirs.
Individual visitors can usually come without a reservation during opening hours. Groups of 10 or more must arrange a guided tour in advance. The museum and shop are generally open Monday to Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and closed on Fridays, weekends and public holidays. Opening arrangements may change before Christmas, so check the official website before visiting.
