The ship "Vasa": why raising it was only the beginning

At the Vasa Museum in Stockholm, the ship's history continues far beyond its maiden voyage. The rise from the bottom was the beginning of a long work to preserve the wooden hull.

Ship and sea

Vasa sank in Stockholm harbor in 1628. The cold, dark, low-oxygen water helped preserve the wood. In 1961, the ship was raised to the surface.

Why a tree should be preserved

After being lifted, the wood found itself in a completely different environment. Preservation and control of conditions are helping to slow deterioration, and researchers continue to study the condition of the hull and its supports.

How to view exposure

Pay attention to the design of the ship and explanations about the work of specialists, and not just to the decorations. Before visiting, please check the current schedule, prices and availability of individual rooms: museum works may change viewing conditions.
