Istanbul by Ferry: A Route Across the Bosphorus
Istanbul lies on two continents, and the best way to feel this is to cross the strait by ferry. Here is a route you can do in one day.
Eminonu and the Galata Bridge
Start at the Eminonu piers, which are always busy. Nearby are fishermen on the bridge, food stalls and a view of mosques on the hills.

The Bosphorus From the Deck
During the crossing you see palaces, bridges and old wooden houses on the shore. Seagulls often fly alongside the ferry, and tea and simit are sold on deck.

The Asian Side: Kadikoy
On the other side of the strait is a district with a market, cafes and streets where locals live. It is calmer than the tourist center.

Route Tips
- City ferries are used by many locals, so find out how to pay the fare
- Choose a spot on the open deck if you want to photograph the views, but bring a warm jacket
- Watch your belongings in the crowds on the piers and in the port
- Check the ferry schedule in advance, as it may differ on different days and seasons
Important: ferry schedules, fares and payment methods change. Check current information on the operators' official websites before your trip.
Bottom Line
A ferry across the Bosphorus is a cheap and impressive way to see Istanbul from the water. Do not rush, drink tea and look around.
