Biri Island Rock Formations

Biri Island Rock Formations – stone giants of the Philippines

The Biri Island Rock Formations are among the most unusual natural attractions in the Philippines. They lie near the northern end of Biri Island in Northern Samar, between the Pacific Ocean and the San Bernardino Strait. Huge rock masses rise above the sea as walls, arches, stepped platforms and isolated stone pillars.

The landscape was shaped by tectonic movements, wave erosion and weathering over millions of years. The formations are estimated to be around 15–20 million years old. Waves gradually wore away weaker sections of rock, producing their striking contours.

The seven major formations

The island is known for seven formations: Magasang, Magsapad, Macadlaw, Bel-at, Caranas, Puhunan and Pinanahawan. Magasang features imposing vertical walls, Magsapad has stepped surfaces, Bel-at is known for broad rock shelves and a natural tidal pool, and Caranas has sea arches that are easier to see at low tide.

Macadlaw is appreciated for sunrise views. Access to individual formations depends on tides, weather and local rules, so it is best to plan the route with a local guide.

Tides and scenic viewpoints

At low tide, passages and rock platforms that are partly submerged at other times may become accessible. Early morning light highlights the layers in the stone and offers excellent photography conditions. However, waves can be powerful and the rocks slippery even when the sea looks calm.

Protected landscape and conservation

The formations are part of the Biri-Larosa Protected Landscape and Seascape. In 2024, local authorities supported an initiative to promote the area as a UNESCO Global Geopark, but this should not be mistaken for an already granted designation.

How to get there

Travellers usually reach the port of Lavezares in Northern Samar and cross the San Bernardino Strait by motorboat. The crossing typically takes about an hour, depending on sea and weather conditions. On Biri, local transport, often a motorcycle with a driver, can take visitors toward the formations. Boat schedules may change or be suspended in rough weather.

Visitor tips

Bring drinking water, sun protection and shoes with good grip. The exposed rock platforms offer little shade, and surfaces can be sharp, hot or slippery. Do not leave rubbish or damage the rocks, and follow local rules for swimming and climbing. Biri is memorable for its towering stone walls, sea arches, tidal pools and open ocean views.
