The memorial Park "This is the place" is located in the east of Salt Lake City. It has historical significance because it was built to commemorate the moment when Brigham Young first saw the Salt Lake Valley, which became the home of Mormon immigrants. Every year on July 24, Utah celebrates the anniversary of their arrival to a new place.
History of creation
Archival records indicate that believers said Brigham Young had a vision through which people could learn about this place. When the religious leader and politician reached the canyon, he declared publicly: "This is the place." The Mormon pioneers settled here and tried to do everything possible to make the valley flourish.
In 1917, a wooden milestone was erected at the place where the settlers set foot on new land. Four years later, the sign was replaced by an obelisk, visible from the east side of the monument, which began to be built in 1937. It is symbolic that the descendant of the pioneer Mahoney Yang, who chose the profession of a sculptor, was involved in the work of the Memorial Park "This place". On the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the Mormons in Salt Lake, in 1947, the historical monument was unveiled in the presence of 50,000 people, which underlines its significance.
Short description
The main decoration of the Memorial Park "This is the place" is a sculptural composition consisting of 3 pedestals and 2 steles. The figures of Brigham Young, Heber Kimball, and Wilford Woodruff are immortalized here, and below you can see the legendary phrase after which the park was named. Horsemen on horseback are depicted on 2 sides, figures of Orson Pratt and Erastus Shaw are located at the base, their structure is decorated with quotations from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah. There is a plaque at the base of the historical monument where you can read how this work was created. On the steles of the Memorial Park "This is the place" there are carts of immigrants, and on the reverse side there are iconic figures in the history of Utah.
Since 1959, work has begun here to recreate the village of the first Mormons with the Young farm, the original pioneer housing, a replica of the assembly hall, and so on. Since 1971, the area of the Memorial Park "This place" has increased to almost 2 square kilometers. To experience the atmosphere of the past years, replicas of old trains used by visitors have been recreated here. An exhibition dedicated to Indians has been held in the Emery County Cabin since 2009. There is also a corral for animals in the park, and a hospital and shops were opened in the 21st century.

TRAX buses pass nearby, and it's also easy to book a taxi from anywhere in Salt Lake City. From the age of 21, you can rent a car from a carsharing company. The Memorial Park "This is the place" can be reached via Sunnyside Avenue. It is recommended to study the visit schedule when planning a trip, as the schedule may change.
