Millesgården
A magnificent museum called Millesgarden has found its place in the east of Sweden. It is surrounded by a landscaped park with wonderful sculptural compositions. Millesgarden is located on the steep Herserud mountain, which gives it special features.
Back in 1906, the sculptor Carl Milles acquired a small piece of land where the Millesgarden Museum is now located. Here he planned to build a family home and open a workshop with his wife, who was an artist. Year after year, the house was transformed under the guidance of the owner's brother, Evert Milles. By 1931, the territory that belonged to the sculptor was significantly increasing. In the same year, the Milleses leave for the USA. A few years later, they create the Millesgarden Foundation, and the apartment itself and the adjacent park are transferred to the state of Sweden.
The largest and most wonderful garden on this territory appears after the Millesov couple returned from abroad in 1950. At the same time, Carl Milles places amazing copies of monuments here, the originals of which can be found in different cities, both in the USA and Sweden. Gradually, the garden is filled with interesting sculptural structures, fountains and monuments are being built here, but at the same time the pines and birches that grew here remain in their place.
Of course, the founder of the park was here and was buried in 1955 in the forest chapel. His wife, who died in 1967, is also buried next to her husband.
Today's Millesgarden is divided into sections. The favorite part of the garden's guests is, of course, the one where the house of the Milles family is located. It houses collections, among which the most valuable is considered to be the assembly of antique Sweden. The whole garden is blooming and fragrant, and it is complemented by sculptures erected by Carl Milles. The exhibition space itself houses works that represent contemporary art. There is also a museum shop where you can buy your favorite exhibit. In the house where the gardener used to live, there is a bistro called the Pink Terrace. There is a house very close by where you can take art lessons, which is a source of inspiration. One of the first structures in this area appeared on the site where the Upper Terrace is located today. The oldest gate, through which the entrance used to be located, is also located here. Nowadays, the entrance for visitors goes through the Exhibition Hall, and the exit is through the Lower Terrace, built back in the 50s.
In Millesgarden, there are no boundaries between nature and architecture, everything just complements each other. In the literature, you can often find this complex called Italy of the North.
