Saadiyat Island

Saadiyat Island is located 11 kilometers from the center of Abu Dhabi and belongs to the protected natural areas of the UAE. Here you can relax on the white beaches by the turquoise sea, see iconic sights, watch dolphins swim to the shore and gazelles graze among the dunes.

History of creation

Saadiyat Island is a natural island, the project for its improvement was developed by TDIC. It was planned to create a space that could simultaneously keep in touch with the rich heritage of the country and become a symbol of modernity. 

The presentation of the new area on the island took place in 2007. Architect Jean Nouvel, who gained fame after the opening of the Louvre Abu Dhabi, and designer Norman Foster, who participated in the development of the concept of the National Museum in the capital of the United Arab Emirates, were invited to work.

Short description

The name of Saadiyat Island translates as "island of happiness", here the natural beauty of nature harmoniously combines with the comfort of premium class. The climate is tropical, with hot weather prevailing throughout the year. It is better to come here in autumn or spring, when the average temperature is up to +30 degrees. Winters are cool here, the temperature drops to +20 degrees, but in summer it can be above 50 degrees.

The island is divided into 4 zones with:

  • beaches;
  • places of interest;
  • The embankment;
  • hotels.

Beach area

The length is 8 kilometers, there are open and closed beaches, the Public Beach is almost 400 meters long and is accessible to everyone, the Beach Club belongs to the club beach, in addition to the main infrastructure there is a sauna with a swimming pool, a fitness area and a SPA. 

There are 5-star hotels on Saadiyat Island with their own coastal area, equipped for a luxurious stay. It is noteworthy that professional athlete Gary Player designed an 18-hole golf club, which was recognized as one of the most challenging golf courses in the world.

What can I see

The area with attractions includes the Performing Arts Center, the Louvre Abu Dhabi and museums with exhibitions, which also organize workshops. The mosque of the founder and first president of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed, is located here. More than 7,000 people can be in the main prayer hall at the same time. The doors of one of the largest prayer buildings are open not only to Muslims, but also to representatives of all faiths. Admission is free, but prior online registration is required for tourists. 

Also on the Island of Saadiyat, attention is drawn to the art object "Flower Clock", a skyscraper with a glass facade Aldar. The artificial island of Yas is a 10-minute drive away.

How to get

There is a wide range of transportation options: plane, bus, taxi or rented car. Saadiyat Island is connected to the center of Abu Dhabi by bridges, and the expressway can be reached in about 5 minutes. From the international airport of the capital of the UAE, Saadiyat can be reached in half an hour by transfer. You should book your trip in advance, specifying the time and place of departure. At Sultan Bin Zayed St/AD Bus Station, passengers can take a direct bus to their destination, with a journey time of about 20 minutes.
