Short description

In the past, Abu Dhabi, or as it is also called Abu Zabi, was a simple village that eventually transformed into a megacity. The Al Hosn quarter occupies a special place in the current capital of the United Arab Emirates. The quarter includes palm alleys, a small man-made pond and other elements.

These include:

  • Qasr al-Hosn fortress with high towers.
  • A cultural center founded in 1981, with a library, workshops and venues for performances by artists.
  • The House of Crafts, where national crafts that have become the property of the whole world are demonstrated. For example, al-sadu's weaving skills were officially included in the UNESCO List.

A bit of history

The Al Hosn quarter was founded in the 17th century, and it is believed that it was from this quarter that the capital of the United Arab Emirates began to develop. Al-Hosn stands out from the rest of the buildings, the alternative name of the fortress sounds like the White Fort and the Old Fort. It was not originally white, but it was painted during the reconstruction period in 1976-1983. The fort was built in 1761 and was used as a watchtower to protect the freshwater well of Abu Dhabi. At that time, the well was the only one, so its condition was closely monitored.

In 1793, it was decided to expand the tower, turning it into a small fort. This place was the permanent residence of the ruling sheikh. The tower in the Al Hosn quarter received its current appearance after reconstruction in the 1930s. It was conducted on the proceeds from the issuance of the first oil license in Abu Dhabi. The Qasr al-Hosn fortress has been restored several times, which underlines the importance of the site.

It is held annually throughout the Al Hosn quarter and lasts for 11 days. At this time, the fort is open to the public, you can even enter the closed areas.
