The Corniche is considered one of the most popular places for walking among residents and visitors of Abu Dhabi. Its length is 8 kilometers, it is equipped with pedestrian zones, bike paths, playgrounds and sports grounds, cafes and restaurants. Festivals, sports competitions and concerts are often held here.
History
The idea of beautifying the embankment appeared in the 1960s. At that time, the UAE had not yet been formed, Abu Dhabi was not a megacity, but a small trading and fishing village. The infrastructure was limited, but the place definitely had prospects. Until the 70s, the area was a beach, but then a new phase began. During the 70s and 80s, work was carried out to expand the embankment through land reclamation. Artificial islands were created along the coastline, which expanded the walking area and created more space for entertainment. This has contributed to the fact that 30 to 50,000 visitors visit the Corniche every month.
Reconstruction
The Abu Dhabi authorities carried out the reconstruction of the coastal zone in the early 2000s. Tons of white sand were brought in, and workers built walking paths. The Corniche embankment has been decorated and landscaped.
During the construction work, some landmarks were demolished, including a fountain and a clock tower. To increase the population and tourist flow, various facilities began to be built on the Corniche Embankment. As part of the improvement of the coastal zone, gardens, parks, playgrounds and places for small picnics have appeared.
