Eco-city Masdar City

The eco-city of Masdar City is not yet fully completed. It is located 17 kilometers southeast of Abu Dhabi. The project to launch it was initiated by the UAE Government and developed by Foster and Partners from the UK.

The basic concept

It was planned to create a city with minimal carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere, complete waste recycling, and powered by renewable energy sources. Instead of ordinary cars, citizens travel by public electric transport. Private cars are allowed only in the suburbs.

Among the residents of the city are scientists, startups and their families. The possibility of creating more than 1,500 enterprises, institutions, and opening stores where only environmentally friendly products can be purchased was considered. The construction of a high wall in the eco-city of Masdar City is able to protect the city from the desert wind.

History of creation

The project was launched in 2006, and approximately $22 billion was allocated for its implementation. The most environmentally friendly city on Earth was supposed to open in 2016, but the dates were repeatedly postponed. According to data for 2023, 15,000 people lived here, according to information for 2026, the construction of the eco-city of Masdar City has not yet been completed. The houses here are built close to each other to reduce the amount of sunlight coming from the street. This is necessary to protect against natural overheating of the premises and reduce material wear. The development of a 46-meter wind tower to create coolness in a desert area was presented.

Short description

The area of the eco-city of Masdar City is estimated at 6 square kilometers. Because the bioclimatic design was chosen: the streets running from north to south are narrow, and all the buildings are low. The construction of wind towers is used to maintain ventilation. The facades are decorated with photovoltaic panels that convert solar energy into electricity. A desalination plant will be powered by solar energy. Workers will install motion sensors around the perimeter to help save resources.

In addition to shops, there are cafes, restaurants, research institutes, educational institutions, and playgrounds in the eco-city of Masdar City. Infrastructure expansion is planned. New projects will be implemented. Eventually, the eco-city should become completely energy-independent. Experts believe that this mission, although difficult, is technically feasible.

How to get

The eco-city of Masdar City should become an example of sustainable urban development. It is located next to Abu Dhabi International Airport. It takes 8 minutes by car. Guests should leave their vehicles on the outskirts, because according to the idea of the authors of the project, it is possible to move around the eco-city only by electric public transport.
