The Mir and Universe archipelagos are known as artificial island projects in Dubai, but they have never been completed. They remained a reminder that the UAE was rapidly developing due to oil production. With their launch, it would be possible to attract more tourists and investors, and further strengthen their positions on the world stage.
A bit of history
The idea of building the Mir and Universe archipelagos was enthusiastically received. The names were chosen for a reason: the "World" consisted of islands resembling continents. Each of them received a name in the form of an existing geographical feature. Another archipelago was created as a territory in the form of the Milky Way and the Solar System. No construction work was carried out, and the Universe project was also frozen.
What were the difficulties
When implementing the projects, it became clear that all the nuances were not taken into account during planning. The sand for construction turned out to be not only too fine, but also mobile to create a stable structure. The water was constantly eroding it, so stone breakwaters with a height of more than 2 meters were installed to protect the sites. The problem is that they disrupted the natural circulation of water, and this led to a deterioration in the environmental situation. It was also difficult to find investors, and there was a lack of financing.
The Mir Archipelago
The size of the islands is estimated to be up to 83 thousand square meters. In 2004, an island with the symbolic name "Dubai" appeared, followed by "America", "Asia", "Middle East". They were designed so that they can avoid earthquake damage. The marine fauna remained safe, but it was still not possible to complete the project. Due to the economic crisis, the connection to the engineering infrastructure has not even begun.

Mir is located 4 kilometers from the Dubai coastline. Its area is 55 square meters. You can get there by yacht or boat, the trip time will not take more than 20 minutes. The plots attracted the attention of the stars. In 2007, actors Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt bought the rights to "Ethiopia", and Chinese entrepreneur Bing Hu bought "China".
Commercial plots were sold for the construction of hotels. The design of the complexes was entrusted to representatives of the high fashion industry. So, in 2010, the project was presented to Giorgio Armani. There is no exact information yet on whether tours to the "World" will be organized for tourists.
Archipelago "Universe"
Nakheel Properties development company announced the project in 2008, but it failed to be implemented. To date, there is no such archipelago, and construction work is not underway. The idea was to create islands represented as astronomical objects of the Solar System.
It was expected that the 2 main islands would be shaped like the Sun and Moon, with Saturn and Jupiter islands divided into 3 parts between them. It was assumed that 15-20 years would be enough to realize the planned plans. However, in 2009, it was announced that the project had been postponed indefinitely. Over time, the information was removed from the developer's website. This suggests that, perhaps, the archipelago "Universe" will never be built.
