Mikhailovskaya battery
The Mikhailovskaya Battery is a museum complex that is part of the museums of fortifications. Collections of tools exclusively from the 19th century are provided in this place. The battery was built in 1846 on the shore of the city of Sevastopol. She was named after one of the greatest princes of the time, Romanov, the son of Nicholas I Pavlovich and his wife Alexandra Feodorovna.
The history of the Mikhailovskaya Battery
The site for the construction site was a former artillery battery that protected the military port from the enemy. Limestone, which was mined in the Nakhimovsky district of Sevastopol, became the material for the construction of the Mikhailovskaya battery. The museum looks like a U-shaped port, it consists of a building that is located in the center, as well as tank buildings that are adjacent to it. The length of all structures reaches 108 meters, if you count without the flanks. With the flanks, it turns out to be 205 meters. The thickness of the wall impresses with its impressive size of 180 centimeters. Two towers were built inside the complex, but only one managed to survive to our time. The entire area could accommodate 115 guns and 750 people. At that time, the battery was one of the best defense points of the entire Crimean Peninsula.
Mikhailovskaya battery at different times
In 1920, new employees of the complex were taught courses on the devices of guns. During the Great Patriotic War, the Mikhailovskaya Battery was a very important strategic facility. The first volleys of guns were heard in 1942, when enemy forces launched an attack. Nowadays, the Mikhailovskaya Battery has been converted into a museum complex, which opened in 2010 after a major restoration. To date, the museum is organizing the exhibition "Heroic Sevastopol". The exhibition contains the most incredible inventions of that time. The number of exhibits reaches 10,000, they are located in 30 halls. The main part of the exhibition is devoted to the Crimean War of 1853-1856.
