Aeolian Islands

The Aeolian Islands are a picturesque archipelago that is of volcanic origin. It is located fifty kilometers from Sicily and covers an area of 114.7 square kilometers. The archipelago itself has 8 islands and a population of more than 14,000 people. To explore each island, you need to come here for 2 weeks.

Aeolian Islands

Vulcano Island

The name of the island in the Aeolian Islands tells tourists about volcanic activity. Here you can see everything: solidified lava, craters, fumaroles, and so on. To admire the beautiful views, it is recommended to visit several volcanic sites, each of which has an amazing history. For example, the huge Fossa crater can give you a beautiful view of the violet sea. Yellow fumaroles will take you to the world when the ancient Romans worshiped the god Hephaestus, and the Greeks worshiped Aeolus. The island itself is quite small; tourists come here when traveling to the Aeolian Islands to enjoy the healing mud lake and visit the black sand beaches.

Lipari Island

This is the central island of the Aeolian Islands, the capital of this archipelago. You can find cute colorful houses everywhere here. The main attraction is St. Bartholomew's Cathedral, painted with unique designs. This is the largest island of all, which is why tourists are advised to visit it during a visit to Italy. About 10 thousand residents live here, who will happily talk about their town.

Stromboli Island

But this island among all the Aeolian Islands is shrouded in mystical secrets. Its cone rises above the surface of the sea, and during volcanic eruptions it glows in the dark. The Stromboli volcano “works” almost without interruption. It has been erupting continuously for two thousand years. At the foot of the island lies a small town with houses made of volcanic rocks and quiet and modest streets. By the way, this particular place became a unique backdrop for real masterpieces. The films "Volcano" and "Stromboli, God's Land" were filmed here, where the famous actress Ingrid Bergman played one of the main roles.

Of course, not all tourists can visit the Aeolian Islands, but you can admire the outlines of the volcano right from the deck of the ship. Agree, not in every place you can find a miracle of nature that “grows” straight from the sea. If you're lucky, you'll be able to watch the volcano erupt and rocks hissing into the sea water. The island of Stromboli has its own special aroma - a mixture of the sea, volcanic steam and the smell of orange trees.
