Masungi Georeserve

Masungi Georeserve is located in Baras, Rizal province, Philippines, amid the forested mountains of the southern Sierra Madre. This conservation area is known for dramatic limestone formations, karst terrain, tropical forest, and guided trails that introduce visitors to a distinctive natural landscape.

A Remarkable Karst Landscape

The reserve's defining feature is its limestone terrain, shaped by geological processes over millions of years. Sharp ridges, rocky towers, and natural hollows create the impression of a stone garden surrounded by forest. The name Masungi is associated with the Filipino word masungki, meaning pointed or spiked.

Forest and Biodiversity

The rock formations are surrounded by forest that supports diverse plant and animal life. The area contributes to habitat protection, forest restoration, and watershed conservation. Visitors may encounter tropical vegetation, ferns, and vines along the trails. Wildlife should be observed from a distance and never fed or touched.

The Discovery Trail

The Discovery Trail is a popular way to explore the georeserve and usually takes around three to four hours. The route passes through karst formations, forest sections, and constructed paths with steps, bridges, and rope features. A park ranger accompanies the group and explains the landscape and conservation work. Highlights include the web-like Sapot viewing platform, the cave formation Yungib ni Ruben, and the rocky peaks called Tatay and Nanay. Viewpoints offer panoramas of the forest and Laguna de Bay.

Conservation and Forest Restoration

The Masungi Georeserve Foundation works to protect limestone formations, restore forests, conserve biodiversity, and promote environmental education. Responsible geotourism helps support these activities and involves nearby communities in conservation.

How to Get There

The entrance is near Kilometer 47 of Marcos Highway in Baras, Rizal. Visitors commonly travel by car from Metro Manila, with journey times depending on traffic. Check the official directions before departure, as mobile reception can be unreliable in some areas.
