The Albertina Gallery is an art museum in Vienna’s historic centre, housed in a former Habsburg palace complex. It is known for its collections of prints, drawings and paintings spanning several centuries of art history.
History
The museum takes its name from Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen, who collected works of art with his wife, Maria Christina. The collection began in 1776. In 1795, the duke acquired a palace in Vienna and moved his collection there. The holdings grew over time, and the name Albertina became established for the museum in 1921.
The museum collection
The Albertina is home to one of the world’s notable graphic art collections. Its holdings include drawings, prints, paintings, photographs and other works of art. Artists represented in the museum’s collections include Albrecht Dürer, Raphael, Rembrandt, Peter Paul Rubens, Claude Monet, Edgar Degas and Pablo Picasso.
Alongside historical works, the museum hosts exhibitions of art from the 19th to the 21st century. Its permanent displays and temporary exhibitions introduce visitors to different artistic movements and periods in European art.
The building and the modern Albertina
The museum occupies a historic palace in central Vienna. Its architecture combines features of the original palace complex with modern additions introduced during renovations. In 2003, the building received a distinctive contemporary canopy designed by architect Hans Hollein.
The complex contains exhibition galleries and additional visitor facilities. Allow several hours to explore the main displays, especially if you plan to see temporary exhibitions.
How to get there
