Tara River Canyon

About Tara River Canyon

Tara River Canyon is one of Montenegro’s most remarkable natural landmarks and one of Europe’s deepest river gorges. It lies in the country’s north among the Dinaric Mountains, where steep limestone walls, dense forests and clear turquoise water form a dramatic landscape. In places, the canyon reaches approximately 1,300 metres deep.

The Tara River and its natural environment

The Tara is known for its cold, clear water, rapids and fast-flowing stretches. Coniferous and mixed forests cover the slopes, providing habitat for many birds and mammals. The old-growth Crna Poda forest, with its tall black pines, is especially valuable. The region’s combination of cliffs, forests and river habitats makes it important for Balkan biodiversity.

Durmitor National Park and UNESCO

The canyon is associated with Durmitor National Park, which protects mountain landscapes, glacial lakes, forests and deep gorges. The park was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980. The Tara River Basin is also recognised as a biosphere reserve under UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme.

Đurđevića Tara Bridge

One of the best-known viewpoints is near Đurđevića Tara Bridge. This concrete arch bridge crosses the deep valley and has become a symbol of northern Montenegro. Views from the bridge and nearby platforms reveal the river, cliffs and forested mountains. During the tourist season, visitors can also find zipline activities over the canyon.

Rafting and outdoor activities

Rafting is one of the main ways to experience the canyon. Trips pass through rapids, calmer stretches and small natural beaches. The rafting season usually runs from spring to autumn. Spring snowmelt can make the river more powerful, while summer often offers a wider range of guided trips. The water remains cold even in warm weather, so use proper safety equipment and follow your guide’s instructions.

When to visit and how to get there

Late spring, summer and early autumn are good times for viewpoints and outdoor activities. Visitors often travel by car or on an organised excursion from Žabljak, Pljevlja or other towns in northern Montenegro. Đurđevića Tara Bridge is a convenient starting point for exploring the canyon. Mountain roads are winding, so allow extra travel time and check the weather before setting out.

Visitor tips

Bring sturdy shoes, an extra warm layer and drinking water. For rafting, wear the provided life jacket and helmet. Keep away from unprotected cliff edges, avoid unmarked descents to the river and take all rubbish with you. Tara River Canyon offers spectacular scenery, rich wildlife and memorable outdoor adventures.
