Smolenskoye Poozerye National Park

Smolenskoye Poozerye National Park is a large protected natural area in western Smolensk Oblast, Russia, spanning the Demidov and Dukhovshchina districts. Established on April 15, 1992, the park protects forests, lakes, wetlands, and other natural landscapes. It covers approximately 1,462.37 km², or 146,237 hectares. In 2002, the area became part of UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves.

A land of glacial lakes

The park is best known for its numerous lakes formed by ancient glacial processes. Thousands of years ago, the Valdai Glacier shaped the region's hills, hollows, and winding valleys. As the ice retreated, water filled many of these depressions. According to the park's official materials, the territory contains around 35 lakes.

The best-known is Lake Sapsho, surrounded by wooded shores. Nikolay Przhevalsky, the famous explorer of Central Asia, compared it to a miniature Baikal. Lake Chistik is noted for its clear water, while Lake Rytoye has shores that are more convenient for recreation. The variety of water bodies makes the park appealing for nature observation, walking, and ecotourism.

Forests, wetlands, and wildlife

Forests cover a substantial part of the park and include pine, spruce, and mixed woodland. Bogs and peatlands retain moisture and provide habitats for many plant and animal species. Together, the forests and lakes create a varied natural environment.

Wildlife includes moose, wild boar, bears, wolves, foxes, and lynx. The park is particularly rich in birdlife, with more than 240 recorded species, including rare birds of prey and the black stork. Since 2015, the park has been working to restore a stable population of European bison. Visitors should observe wildlife from a safe distance and never approach or feed the animals.

Nature trails and ecotourism

Ecological trails and tourist routes allow visitors to explore the park's lakes, woodlands, and other natural features while helping protect fragile ecosystems. Depending on the season, activities include walking, birdwatching, and nature photography. Some routes and organized activities may require prior arrangements with the park administration.

The village of Przhevalskoye, where the national park administration is located, is a useful starting point for exploring the area. Before travelling, visitors should check the official website for current entry rules, restrictions in particular zones, and excursion arrangements.

A natural treasure of Smolensk Oblast

Smolenskoye Poozerye combines lake scenery, forests, wetlands, and habitats for rare species. Its international biosphere reserve status highlights the area's importance for nature conservation and environmental education. The park is an appealing destination for travellers who want to discover less-developed natural landscapes in Russia shaped by ancient glaciers.
