This beautiful island off Cancun is also rich in culture and history that is worth exploring during your visit.
History of Isla Mujeres
In pre-Columbian times, this island was considered sacred to the Mayan goddess Ixchel, goddess of the moon, happiness, fertility and medicine. It is believed that the only inhabitants of the island were Ixchel and her court of women. Later, when the people of Spain came to this land in the 16th century, they found many statues and images of the goddess and named it "Isla de Mujeres".
What does the name "Isla" mean? Isla means "island" and mujeres means "women." Thus, the land received the name "Island of Women". Since then it has been simply called "Isla Mujeres". The temple of the goddess Ixchel was located on the southern side of the land and was used as a lighthouse for ships. The light of the torches could be seen through holes in the walls, and it gave the sailors a guide in the dark.
Travel around the island
Isla Mujeres is relatively small, so it won't take long to enjoy this island off Cancun. This means that it can be explored on foot. You can also rent a bicycle, moped or golf cart, as the locals do.
