Archaeological zone of El Meco
The archaeological zone of El Meco is located on the territory of Cancun, more precisely 10 km from its central part of the city. There is more than one such area in the vicinity of Cancun, but it is El Meco that stands out for its history and unique atmosphere. The zone also stands out in that it is more accessible to tourists; ticket prices here are lower than in similar places, and the route itself is convenient - trains run regularly and a highway leads here.
History
According to scientists, the archaeological zone of El Meco was developed back in 850 BC. Today, only a small part of that large settlement has survived. The remaining settlement consists of 50 buildings, on top of one of which is a majestic Mayan temple. Here you can also find burial places of important people of that time. Many scientists believe the site is closely connected with the port of Isla Mujeres. From the top of the main viewpoint of the El Meco archaeological site, the main structure of the site is clearly visible. The main building of this place is a magnificent pyramid, which the locals called a real “fortress”.
Features of the archaeological zone of El Meco
It is worth noting the fact that the pyramid is the only similar structure in the entire district. This settlement was originally a fishing village. However, after some time, local residents were forced to leave the territory, and the settlement process began a little later. For the second time, the archaeological zone of El Meco was settled by the Spaniards, who made changes to the way of life of the local residents, who still remained to live here in small numbers. The Spanish way of life is evident in the architecture and dialect of local residents.
The archaeological zone of El Meco is very popular among archaeologists; excavations are carried out here every year, and world-famous scientists give various master classes to local Mexican archaeologists. If you like old buildings, as well as beautiful Mexican buildings, you may like this place; seasoned travelers recommend taking some beautiful photos for memory with the majestic buildings in the background.
