Once upon a time, noisy festivities took place on Heroes' Square in Budapest. Before the decision was made to build a memorial, there was a fountain on this site, from which one could drink water supplied directly from a thermal spring. The erection of bronze monuments began around the 20th century. After Hungary was declared an independent country, a memorial was placed in front of the column. It serves as a reminder of the fallen Hungarian soldiers. On national holidays, a guard is lined up near the memorial plaque.
