Houhai Lake

Lake Houhai is considered sacred; it attracts with its history and beautiful views. Local residents say that Houhai is considered the best place to get to know ancient Chinese culture. The lake area is especially popular with foreign tourists visiting Beijing, but is also frequently visited by local couples and young people.

History of the lake

Lake Houhai, in its Chinese translation, means "sea coming from behind." It was not named by chance, since the reservoir is located at the back of the sea, next to the Gugong Palace and Jingpshan Park. Houhai smoothly begins its flow from the east, flowing along the huge blocks of the city, and then sharply rushes into a narrow channel, which is located on Xinjiekou Street. In the south, one can observe the movement of Houhai towards Pingyan Road, and on its northern side, the river is next to a huge arterial road.

It should be noted that Lake Houhai was created artificially in Beijing, this lake was considered the place where the imperial family spent their free time, and today it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in China, thanks to which tourists can become better acquainted with the unique Chinese history and the glorious traditions of China. On the shores of the lake there are also bars, restaurants, cafes, shops, clubs and many other establishments that are especially beautiful at night.

Features of Houhai Lake

Memorable places located on the lake include, for example, the wonderful Yindingqiao Bridge, which serves as an excellent viewing point, as well as a place where you can take photos of beautiful and unique landscapes. One of the most popular places in the city is Kaozhuozi - a large and unique Muslim restaurant where you can taste excellent kebabs and traditional Muslim dishes. There is also another unique restaurant here - Lijiai, the menu of which is prepared every day and where visitors can taste seafood dishes, the fish for which are caught by fishermen every day.

Yandaisese Street, which runs along the lake, is one of the oldest streets in Beijing, more than 100 years old. On the street there are shops selling excellent tobacco, which is actively produced on plantations in China. There are also Chinese barbershops and shops where you can buy household goods. Closer to the shores of Lake Houhai there are sugar workshops where traders buy sugar in bulk. They also sell various spices and sweets that every tourist should try.
