Qhapaq Ñan: the roads that connected the Andes

The Andean road network of Qhapaq Ñan connected mountains, valleys, coasts and other inaccessible areas. This is not one trail, but a system of roads and associated structures created and expanded during different periods of the region's history.

Network instead of one road

The system connected the vast lands of the Incas and was used for communication, trade and administration. According to UNESCO, it covers over 30 thousand kilometers. It is based on four main directions emanating from the Cusco region.

Road and terrain

At different sites, builders had to take into account heights, slopes, rivers and climate. Therefore, the road changes its appearance along with the landscape: in some places the stonework is visible, and in others the path is easier to recognize by its position on the slope. The surviving sites are not necessarily similar to each other.

How to choose a site for a walk

Explore the specific route available, rather than trying to imagine the entire network as a single excursion. Check permits, transportation and trail conditions; At altitude, consider your own well-being and do not plan to climb too quickly. Do not remove stones or go off designated paths.
