Nara from Kyoto in One Day: Deer, Todai-ji and the Old Town
Nara makes a rewarding day trip from Kyoto: watch deer in the park, visit the Great Buddha Hall and explore the quieter lanes of Naramachi. This self-guided plan leaves room to pause rather than collect every sight. Allow 6–8 hours in town; the suggested stop times below are an itinerary idea, not a tour timetable.

Getting there from Kyoto
Compare Kintetsu trains to Kintetsu-Nara with JR services to JR Nara for your travel date. These are different stations; Kintetsu-Nara is closer to the park. A Kintetsu Limited Express requires a reserved-seat Limited Express ticket in addition to the basic fare; ordinary Express services are a different category. Check connections, the total price and your return journey.
A suggested day on foot
09:00 · Arrive
Head from Kintetsu-Nara towards the park. For a first visit, focus on this eastern side of the city.
09:30 · Nara Park
Follow the park paths, watch the deer and pause for photographs. The deer are wild animals, not pets.
10:30 · Todai-ji
Allow time for the Daibutsu-den, or Great Buddha Hall. The museum and other halls may require separate admission.
12:00 · Lunch break
Take a proper rest and carry water. Choose a lunch stop using current opening hours and your dietary requirements.
13:00 · Towards Kasuga Taisha
Continue along wooded approaches with stone lanterns. This is an active shrine: follow marked routes and photography rules. Special entry to the inner area is optional.

15:00 · Naramachi
If you have energy left, finish among traditional houses, small shops and cafes. Check individual opening hours rather than assuming everything stays open late.

16:30 · Head back
Leave time to reach your chosen station. In bad weather or if tired, shorten the day to the park and Todai-ji.
Respect the deer
- Do not chase, grab or crowd animals for a photograph.
- If feeding is permitted, use designated shika senbei deer crackers and follow local instructions, not ordinary human food.
- Keep bags, paper maps and food out of reach; do not tease deer with food and supervise children.
Admission and practical preparation
Official pages checked on 1 November 2026 list adult admission to the Great Buddha Hall at ¥800 and special admission to Kasuga Taisha’s main sanctuary at ¥700. Choosing both costs ¥1,500 before trains, meals and other attractions. Great Buddha Hall hours are 07:30–17:30 from April to October and 08:00–17:00 from November to March. Recheck prices and ceremonial closures before travelling.
