Ecuador: At the Height of Volcanoes and the Equator
Ecuador lies on the equator, but high in the mountains the climate is cool. Here are three places that show the country's contrast.
Quito: A City in the Andes
Quito sits very high above sea level, and its old centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the first days it is better to move slowly so the body can adapt to the altitude.

Cotopaxi Volcano
Cotopaxi is considered one of the country's best-known volcanoes. Its snowy cone is visible from afar, and around it you can walk across high plains where a cold wind often blows.

The Equator Monument
Not far from Quito stands a monument marking the equator line. Many come to photograph themselves with one foot in each hemisphere.

Trip Tips
- Give your body time to adapt to the altitude and drink water
- Dress in layers: it is warm by day but cold in the evening and in the mountains
- Use sunscreen, as the sun is very strong at altitude
- If you feel unwell at altitude, see a doctor
Important: volcano visiting conditions, entry rules and health requirements change. Check current information on official websites before your trip and consult a doctor about altitude.
Bottom Line
Ecuador is interesting for the contrast of equator and highlands. Look after your health, and the country shows its best.
