Fort Siloso
Fort Siloso, built in the western part of Sentosa Island, is the only surviving witness to Singapore's military past. It was built by the British at the end of the 19th century in order to protect the narrow entrance from the sea to Keppel Harbor from pirates. For a long time, being at the disposal of Great Britain, it was the most important strategic object. The name of the fort means "jealous man" in Filipino.
During the Second World War, the Siloso Fortress was the main stronghold when approaching Singapore from the western side. The fortification played an important role in protecting the British from invading attacks. In order to repel a possible assault, the British deployed a large number of weapons. For a long time, 6-inch artillery weapons protected Singapore Harbor, but they still could not resist the attacks of Japan. The Japanese turned Fort Siloso into a prisoner of war camp. British and Australian prisoners were held in the walls of the fortress with unbearable conditions. Many died at the place of detention without waiting for their release. Nowadays, Singaporeans, considering this place to be holy, hold memorial days.
Since 1967, the island, along with Fort Siloso, became the property of Singapore. At the end of the 20th century, the fortress served as a prison for the famous Singaporean politician Chia Tai Po.
A partial restoration of this defensive facility was gradually carried out. In the late 80s, the fort was completely renovated and opened to tourists.
The museum will be of interest primarily to fans of historical action. This museum has a lot of wartime weapons, starting from the 17th century and up to the hours of the Second World War. Mannequins of British soldiers and military personnel are placed around the entire circumference of Fort Siloso, creating real pictures of military life.
Fans of military attractions will be able to see warehouses, ammunition bunkers, barracks, and wander through old tunnels that kept secrets of the military situation. Through numerous photographs and documents, you can explore all the details of the war, and the accompanying guides will tell you the whole story of the battles on Sentosa Island.
