Tara River Canyon
The Tara River is the longest in Montenegro with a length of 144 km, and its canyon is the second largest in the world. The river is named after the Autariate tribe, who lived in the vicinity in the 4th-5th century. The water is considered very clean and transparent, it is allowed to use it without prior purification.
The shade of the water varies from emerald turquoise to white. The water temperature is about 11 degrees Celsius, and even in extreme heat it gives a pleasant coolness. There are many fish in the Tara River. Because of the purity of the water, the river is called the "Tear of Europe." The Tarra is filled with a combination of the waters of several rivers and the beautiful Baylovich Sige waterfall, which falls from a height of 30 m.
The river runs between the rocks and has a mountainous current, there are about 40 rapids, the roar of which can be heard even out of sight, many of them are considered very dangerous. For two centuries, Tara has not changed its direction, carrying its waters from Montenegro to Serbia into the rivers that flow into the Black Sea.
Along the way, Tara created coves hidden in the rocks, in several places above the surface there are forests and rocks covered with mosses.
Turquoise water combined with rocky shores and green forests created an incredible beauty. The 80 km long Tara Canyon, formed due to the drying up of the river, is surrounded by mountains on both sides. It is part of the Durmitor Nature Park and is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
On the territory of the canyon, some of its sections have remained in their original form, a unique forest consisting of black pine has survived here, and there are trees that have been growing for more than 4 centuries.
The arch bridge "Djurgevica", which was built with a length of 370 meters and is one of the most important architectural creations, is considered the hallmark of Montenegro. From a height of 150 meters, you can view the beauty of the surrounding area. The bridge, consisting of 5 arches, is a link connecting the north of the country with the south.
Tara Canyon is open to anyone who loves connection with nature and adventure. Tourists are offered various types of recreation on its territory. The extreme type of recreation includes canoe and raft descents, climbing to the top of cliffs, as well as a route to a mountain lake. For lovers of the history of Orthodoxy, it will be interesting to visit the ancient monasteries built in the canyon valley. This area also attracts rafting enthusiasts.
