Tara River Canyon
The Tara River is the longest in Montenegro with a length of 144 km, and its canyon is the second largest in the world. The river is named after the Autariate tribe, living in the neighborhood in the 4-5th century. Water is considered very clean and transparent, it is allowed to be used without prior treatment.
The shade of water varies from emerald turquoise to white. The water temperature is about 11 degrees Celsius, and even in a strong heat it gives a pleasant coolness. Many fish live in the Tara River. Due to the purity of water, the river is called « Europe Tale ». Tarra's filling occurs with a combination of the waters of several rivers and the beautiful Baylovich Siegu waterfall, which falls from a height of 30 m.
The river passes between the rocks and has a mountain current, there are about 40 rapids, the roar of which is heard even outside their field of vision, many of them are considered very dangerous. For two centuries, Tara has not changed his direction, carrying his waters from Montenegro to Serbia into rivers that flow into the Black Sea.
On the way, Tara created bays covered in rocks, in several places above the surface there are forests and rocks covered by mosses.
Turquoise water in a combination of rocky shores and green forests created incredible beauty. Tara's 80 km long canyon, formed due to the drying of the river, is surrounded by mountains on both sides. It is part of the Durmitor Nature Park and is one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites.
On the territory of the canyon, some of its sections remained in their original form, a unique forest consisting of black pine survived here, there are trees that have been growing for more than 4 centuries.
Montenegro's hallmark is the arched bridge « Djurjevic », which is built 370 meters long and is one of the most important architectural creations. From a height of 150 meters, it is possible to consider the beauty of the adjacent territory. The 5-hole bridge is a link connecting the north of the country with the south.
Tara Canyon is open to all who love the connection with nature and adventure. Tourists on its territory are offered various types of recreation. Extreme leisure activities include canoeing and rafts, climbing to the top of the rocks, as well as a route to the mountain lake.
