Ostrog Monastery

Quite interesting is the location of the Prison at an altitude of 900 meters above sea level. Due to this, this building is clearly visible, regardless of the time of day, as if it were a guiding star.

The founder of the monastery in Montenegro is a religious figure named Vasily Ostrogsky. This beautiful building is a symbol of the unchanging faith of the founder. Ostrogsky was born in 1610 into a religious family. From childhood, his parents instilled faith in God in the boy. At a young age, Vasily Ostrogsky chose his life path, which is connected with the service of God. He devoted himself to this work completely, which earned him the respect of both contemporaries and descendants. Vasily Ostrogsky, in difficult times for the country, actively provided assistance to people in need, and also contributed to the construction of new churches.

Ostrog Monastery

A prison in Montenegro is a place where not only the body but also the soul is healed. After all, in one of the churches of the glorious monastery, the relics of Ostrogsky himself are kept, which are the most important relic of this country. Many people come here to heal themselves, as well as to leave a message to St. Basil, which they write down on a piece of paper.

Ostrog Monastery is not the oldest in this country, but its fame has gone far beyond the borders of Montenegro. It is formed by two parts, which include the Upper and Lower monasteries. They are redistributed by a long five-kilometer forest road. The walls of the Lower Monastery house the relics of the child Saint Stanko, whose upper limbs were cut off by the Turks because he did not want to unclench them to release the sacred Cross. The upper part of the Prison is located on a high rock into which it is embedded. It includes the most important sights of Ostrog, including the Church of the Virgin Mary, as well as the Holy Cross Church. It was in this area that Saint Basil prayed incessantly to God.

There are many legends and real stories among the Montenegrin people related to Ostrog Monastery. They say that the relics of the saint were repeatedly destroyed during the capture of the Prison by enemy troops and, only thanks to a miracle, they were saved. A local legend says that when the saint's soul passed to God (1671), a beautiful vine sprouted from the cliff where the cell was located.

As a confirmation of another miracle of Ostrogsky, a shell remains in the Prison, which during the Second World War fell into the monastery area and did not explode, but disintegrated into pieces.

There are springs with holy water in this sacred complex, which has a healing effect. The water is also bottled and distributed to everyone.

Everyone who has visited Ostrog Monastery at least once is sure that this is the most amazing and beautiful holy place in all of Montenegro.
