Biograd Forest
Biogradski Forest National Park (Montenegrin name Biogradska gora) is located in Montenegro, between the valleys of the Lim and Tara rivers. It contains mountain slopes and peaks (the highest point is 2,139 meters on the Crna Glava Mountain), a forest area of 16 km2, and 6 alpine lakes of glacial origin. The total area of the park is 54 km2.
These regions were noticed by Prince Nikola, who ordered intensive protection of these places in 1878. After that, the Biogradsky forest became a protected area, and it is often called the Prince's Reserve. But it received the status of a National Park only in 1952. Some of the few pristine European forests have been preserved on the park's lands. Some of the trees are more than ten centuries old, about 50 meters high.
The heart of the national park is Biograd Lake, a unique decoration of these places. Locals call it the mirror of the Biogradsky forest, because everything around is imprinted in its depths. The lake is located on a low-lying plain at an altitude of 1094 meters at the very foot of the Yarchev Mountains at an altitude of 1094 meters. The lake originates from glaciers. The lake is about 2000 meters long and 200 meters wide. Centuries-old trees are reflected in it, complement the unique and inspiring picture. There are a large number of trout in the lake and the rivers around it.
The flora and fauna of the Biogradsky forest is very diverse: more than 2000 species of plants and about 200 species of birds will appear before the gaze of travelers. The most smoothed are: deer, chamois, wild boar, fox squirrels. Large meadows, a huge number of lakes, fleeting mountain streams, and ethnic structures will leave few people indifferent. The Biogradsky forest is filled with history: katuns (a place for grazing cattle, equipped with a hut and a detachment), lakes, watermills, savardaks (huts with a thatched roof and low walls).
The park has everything for active recreation: boating, fishing, hiking, as well as a dozen climbing routes. Two walking routes of moderate difficulty are particularly well-known. One of them allows you to see the Lake of Cones, the other is about 18 km long, which will take 5 hours to overcome. It should be noted that fishing is allowed here on certain days – this is Sunday, Tuesday, as well as national holidays from May 1 to June 23.
