High Tauern National Park

The High Tower is one of the largest national parks in Western Europe. It is deployed among the Eastern Alps, in the federal territories of Carinthia, Salzburg and East Tyrol. In 1971, these provinces united their lands and created a protected area of 1,856 km2.

High Tauern National Park

The territory of the Vysoky Tauern Park is surrounded by forests, pastures, and mountain meadows rich in a unique variety of flora and fauna. More than 10 thousand species of animals live here. In the very center of the park there are 266 high mountain peaks, 130 square kilometers of ancient glaciers and glacial currents. One of them is the source of the Krimml waterfall. The highest Austrian mountains touch the sky here - the Grossglockner, with a height of 3798 m above sea level, the Grossfenediger, with a peak of 3674 meters high, and the Grosser Muntanitz, with a height of just over 3200 meters. The Vysoky Tauern Park has more than 500 mountain lakes with mirror-clear water reflecting the blue sky, 279 mountain rushing rivers, and beautiful waterfalls.

Tourism

Many excursions and routes for mountain climbers, skiers, cyclists, and walkers have been developed for tourists. Mountain shelters and restaurants are located along the routes for tourists to relax. There are not many places in the Alps where time and geology have combined to create such greatness that captivates at first glance.

Venediger Mountain Range

The Vysoky Tauern Nature Reserve offers both group and individual guided tours, which can be accompanied by experienced instructors. You can choose any route to suit your taste. The Venediger mountain range is the most picturesque decoration of the reserve. Its height of 3 km 674 m was first conquered in 1841. This is one of the most popular routes. It is designed in such a way that it is not difficult for a trained climber. Observation decks and recreation areas have been built for ordinary tourists.

The Glockner Mountain Range

The dominant peak of the mountain range is Grossglockner Peak, located at an altitude of 3,797 m. The picturesque outlines of the peak attract tourists. They frankly call this place the pearl in the crown of the Alps. Tourists are equally fascinated by the Pastertse Glacier, which stretches for more than 10 km.

There are many places to visit in the High Tauern Nature Reserve: driving along the Hohalpenstrasse serpentine, see the Felbertauern tunnel, before entering which you can admire the grandeur of the Grossglockner. Driving from one attraction to another, from time to time, you can stop at numerous viewing platforms to enjoy the fabulous beauty of valleys, lakes, mountains, and touch the clouds with your hand. It is impossible to breathe in the purest mountain air here. The reserve's attractions include the picturesque Lichtensteinklam mountain gorge, the 370-meter-high Krimml Waterfall, and the Franz Josef Height. For nature lovers, hiking tours are conducted through the untouched places of the reserve, where you can see and learn a lot about local plants and animals, among which Austrian marmots often come to tourists for a portion of carrots.
