Castel dell'Ovo

Castel del Ovo is the oldest castle in Naples, its appearance has changed over the centuries of many wars. The castle was originally built by the Normans and then rebuilt first by the Angioinese and then by the Aragonese. Its name means "Egg Castle". According to legend, the ancient Roman poet Virgil hid a magic egg in the dungeon of the castle, which could protect the entire fortress. If it had broken, the Castle and Naples would have been destroyed.

Cultural Center

Castel del Ovo Castle is located on the beautiful Via Parthenope, the promenade of Naples. A street famous for its history and the surrounding natural beauty. In fact, the etymology of this word comes from its oval shape. Now the castle houses the offices of the regional administration, cultural and landscape heritage of the Campania region. Castel del Ovo is not only a tourist destination, but also a place for events, meetings, exhibitions and filming. The towers and terraces of the castle offer a charming view of the Bay of Naples.

Features of the fortress

Just by crossing the pier of Castel del Ovo Castle, you can appreciate its grandeur. Ramaglietto Pier was built on the "edge of the sun", where the windmills stood. In 2016, it became the catwalk for a fashion event hosted by Dolce&Gabbana. Inside the walls you can see the Normandy Tower. This tower is built on piperno arches (a volcanic rock very common in Campania). It shows the Guelph-style battlements that were added in the second stage. Behind the tower is the Church of San Salvatore. It is built on granite columns with Roman capitals.

Colorful playgrounds

Cannos Terrace is the highest part of Castel del Ovo Castle, and the view that opens before the eyes of visitors makes you hold your breath, especially at sunset. La Terrazza dei Cannoni, suitable for hosting nightclubs, is also often used for photo shoots. The view of the Bay of Naples opens from two terraces, known as "Loggiato ovest" and "Loggiato est": the first one offers a view of the Neapolitan city and adjoins the inner rooms: Companha, Antro di Virgilio and Megarid, which are often used for conventions and meetings. The eastern loggia of Castel del Ovo Castle faces the bay and partially occupies the space of the church of San Pietro, built by the monks of San Basilio and today almost completely destroyed.
