For the first time, the topic of the garden was raised by architect Beretti Vikenty Ivanovich, according to whose plan the Shevchenko University was already built. According to his plan, the garden was to be laid out in a deserted area next to the university. But his plans, due to lack of money, were destined to come true only 5 years later, and another person was already in charge of the construction site - the head of the Department of Botany, R. E. Trautfetter. Then the garden received the status of a temporary building, in 1841 the garden was given permanent status. Only after that did they start building terraces and greenhouses.

By 1950, the collection of the botanical garden had already counted over 25,000 trees, more than 400 varieties of shrubs and over 4,000 varieties of plants from different countries. In 1914, the garden was headed by Alexander Vasilyevich Fomin, who suffered from the First World War and the Civil War. Even in conditions of total ruin, he was able to build 3 new greenhouses, and the Department of Botany, founded by him in 1922, later became the N. G. Kholodny Institute of Botany. After his death in 1935, the botanical garden was named after him. During the Great Patriotic War, many valuable plants were destroyed, many were taken to Germany.

The garden consists of 4 scientific departments engaged in acclimatization, studying plants for their protection, protection from parasites and more rational use. Among the trees you can see those that were planted at the foundation of the garden. These are such representatives of North America as red oak, horse chestnut, black walnut, Weymouth pine, Canadian cersis. Ginkgo, Japanese sophora, and a lacquer tree grow here from Asia. Of the European trees, oriental beech, black pine, and berry yew are particularly worth noting. The botanical garden is full of flowers almost all year round. In spring, rhododendrons bloom along the paths, and closer to summer, magnolias and other shrubs alternate.
