Hashima Island

The island of Hashima, which is located near Nagasaki in Japan, is now a completely deserted area, but once it was full of life.

Hashima Island

If we translate the name of the island of Hashima into Russian, we get « Border Island ». The entire territory of this area is framed by concrete walls, which makes the island similar to the Japanese ship Tosa. It is for this reason that among the local population the island is known as « Cruiser Island ».

Even before the 19th century, the island had the appearance of a rock where birds lived, and sometimes fishermen of neighboring lands swam for the night. Thanks to the deposits of coal that were discovered deep in the rocks, the whole situation has changed. Since 1887, the island of Hashima has gradually turned into an industrial center. Along with coal mining, military supplies are produced here. A very small area of the island accommodated thousands of tenants. Here were not only residential buildings, but the entire infrastructure. Tiny territory, measuring 160 by 480 meters, accommodated hospitals, temples, shops and even restaurants. The island of Hashima in the 50s was the most densely populated territory on the entire planet. Here at that time there were an average of 5 thousand people per km2

A little later, in 1974, mining decreased significantly, and since it was the main income of local residents, the island was completely empty in just a few months.

The modern island of Hasima attracts many tourists, where travel companies offer a sightseeing tour by boat. Since 2005, ordinary people have been denied access to the island itself, but a small area of it became available for excursions in 2009. Buildings on the island are in disrepair, as they are negatively affected by typhoons.

But the empty city is very often interested in film directors, because the films shot here are obtained simply by the masterpieces of world cinema. This area is chosen for work by « black archaeologists », since the things found on the island are very interesting for collectors who pay considerable money for them.

Spin off abandoned city streets – a lesson to the liking of lovers of real adventures.
