Germany is an amazing country with many interesting and unique places. For a person who spends most of his life traveling, the opportunity to visit this country will be a pleasant find. The tourist routes here are very diverse. No less remarkable of them is the Romantic Road.
What's interesting there
For travelers traveling along this route, there are views of incomparable historical sights. It stretches from the vineyards of Würzburg am Main to the small town of Fussen, located in Bavaria. Along the way, there are several dozen towns and villages, including ancient Augsburg, medieval Dinkelsbuhl and Rothenburg an der Tauber. The cozy Bavarian town of Dinkelsbuhl is pretty. The unique ancient architecture is almost completely preserved. The Old Town, one of its main attractions, has original fortifications and streets with half–timbered architecture.
Those who are looking for romance and adventure, welcome to Würzburg, the very place where adventures begin. The Marienberg fortified defensive structure located on a hill is quite popular, which has the Furstenbau and Main Franconia museums. The 18th-century Baroque residence of the bishops of Würzburg and the ancient bridge over the Main River are also located here.
The ruins of a medieval defensive wall have survived in Tauberbischofsheim. Deutschordenschloss Castle, built in the Middle Ages, is located in Bad Mergentheim. At one time, the castle served as a place where the knights of the Teutonic Order gathered. A church was built next to it in 1730 in the Baroque style.
Fans of old castles in Weikersheim will be interested in the 12th century castle, as well as Brattenstein Castle in Rettingen, built in 1230. Here you can also find the Town Hall, built as early as 1750 in the Baroque style, and the church of St. Kilian, dating from the 13th century.
The atmosphere of old rural buildings dating back to 1352 reigns in Kreglingen. But the wooden altar in the Herrgottskirche church is considered the most valuable historical object of the Middle Ages here.
Passing through Rothenburg ob der Tauber, there is an opportunity to see an architectural structure – the Old Town Hall with a tower and clock, a defensive wall, including several churches built in the old days. Schillingsfürst is unique for its castle.
In Feuchtwangen, you can see everything that remains of the walls of the city that once existed here. The Franconian City Museum is considered one of the best representatives of folk art in Southern Germany. There is also a one-of-a-kind museum of singers located here. Towers and walls built in the Middle Ages surround Dinkelsbühl. The local landmark, St. George's Minster Church, is a unique example of late 15th century Gothic art and a Teutonic Order castle with a Rococo chapel.
There are many places to see in Harburg. But two of them stand out – a medieval castle in Germany and a rather rare landmark of these places – a Jewish cemetery.
The Town Hall, designed in the style of the Italian Renaissance, and the majestic residence of the archbishop are among the main highlights of the city of Augsburg. This place even has its own symbol, the Perlachturm Tower.
The 13th century castle in Friedberg, which is now a museum, will also bring unprecedented delight. It features collections of watches, earthenware, and antiquities. There is also the Town Hall and the 18th-century St. Jacob's Church in a pseudo-Romanesque style. By the way, the prison in which Adolf Hitler was imprisoned for organizing the coup is located in Landsberg an der Lech.
The end point of the route is the small town of Fussen. Here you can enjoy equally beautiful views of antiquity. Special attention should be paid to St. Magnus Church, Schlossberg Hill castle, Neuschwanstein Castle, which is famous throughout Bavaria, as well as Hohenschwangau Castle – the kings of Bavaria used to live here.
Welcome to the holiday
In addition to local attractions and beauties, there is an opportunity to have a good time at a holiday, which is usually arranged by the local population. A lot of useful things can be learned from such events, to get acquainted with the culture, to taste the dishes and drinks prepared by the Bavarians.
For example, wine festivals are held in Würzburg every year, from April to November. In Lauda-Konigshofen, you can participate in the heavy metal fair and festival, which takes place here every year.
The Altstadtfest is usually scheduled in Feuchtwangen at the end of May. The beginning of autumn is the time for classical music at Neuschwanstein Castle. And Fussen hosts the Imperial Kaiserfest, a festival of jazz music and string instruments.
How to get there
There are no problems with transportation here. You can get there by rail or by tour bus. But the best way to travel is, of course, by private car. Alternatively, you can travel by Romantische Strasse Bus. It runs daily and covers all directions along this route.
