Chara Sands
Chara Sands – is an amazing natural attraction that belongs to Russia. This area is a sand desert that has dimensions of 10 km in length and 5 km in width. Such an unusual natural picture for a given area is located in the Kalarsky district of the Chita region.
The desert is located forty kilometers from the mountain glaciers of the Kodari ridge. Its surroundings are amazing landscapes from white mountains, as well as vast areas of taiga forests. In some places, sand is saturated to thirty meters high.
Such a natural picture is nowhere else in Tundra to be met. The landscape of this area is simply surprising, because it looks so much like a desert in hot countries, but the background is unusual, which fills the peaks of the snowy mountains. The contrasts of this area simply amaze the imagination, because it is so unnatural. The thought that the north met with the south does not leave his head. This is the same as in the middle of the African desert, snow-capped mountain peaks grew, and instead of numerous camels, northern deer dominate here. On the tops of the mountains, snow does not melt even in the summer. Velvet dunes go into quagmire, as well as swamps.
For such a small area, the landscapes of the Chara sands are quite diverse. In the middle are large embankments of sand, which over the years have formed under the influence of winds. In some places there are formations that reach 80 meters. The outskirts of the desert are framed by mountain ranges, which are also under a layer of sand.
Charcoal sands arose under the influence of natural processes about 1 million years ago. As experts say, a large lake was previously located here, but with the retreat of water, erosion and wind transformed the local landscape.
To see such a contrast of natural wealth, you need to use the services of airlines or get by rail. The nearest Baikal-Amur Railway station is located 6 kilometers from the Charskiy Sands.
