Munich English Garden

The largest green urban park in the whole world is the English Garden of Munich. This landscaped park is a favorite vacation spot for locals as well as visitors to the city. For its scale, it surpassed even such famous parks as New York's Central Park, as well as London's Hyde Park.

The English Garden of Munich covers an area of 4.17 km2. The green park area stretches from the central part of the city to the north for 5.5 km. The main architect of the English Garden was Friedrich Ludwig Schkel. This landscape park in Munich has been in existence since 1972. It was the very first park in Europe accessible to the public.

The English Park originates from the main buildings of this city, namely the State Chancellery and the House of Arts. The city highway divides the long strip of the park, 1 km wide, into two zones. They are connected by a large pedestrian bridge. On the north side, the English Garden abuts the Campus. The southern side of the park is usually quite crowded with vacationers, where more than 120 thousand people can be at the same time. At the same time, the north side remains silent and calm, representing a cozy, well-groomed urban forest.

The English landscape park has suffered from natural disasters more than once, as well as during the world wars.

The garden architect attached special importance to the system of water streams and lakes in the garden. One of the largest and most abundant streams in Munich park is the Eisbach, which attracts fans of water sports, in particular surfing. On the south side of the park stretches the Schwabinger Bach stream, which intersects with the Eisbach. This stream forms a wonderful small waterfall, which is 1 meter high and 15 meters wide. There are amazingly beautiful clearings on both sides of the stream, some of which are a favorite place for nudists to sunbathe. There is also a stream called the Oberstegermeisterbach, whose banks are guarded by deciduous trees.

A subsequent natural attraction is Lake Kleinhessenloe, which has existed since 1800. Fish are found in the clear lake waters, including carp, pike, crucian carp.

A popular place for vacationers is the Seehaus Beer Garden, where you can relax and drink fresh cold beer. The southern part of the English Garden stands out for historical attractions. There is a monopter here, which is decorated with polychrome stone painting. A traditional tea ceremony can be performed in a cozy Japanese tea house, which was established in 1969.

There is an Amphitheater not far from Oberstegermeisterbach, where fascinating theatrical performances by talented actors are regularly held in the summer.

The English Garden of Munich is always crowded, because people like to relax here, both with families and with large noisy companies.
