Strahov Monastery
Stragovsky Monastery – Monastery, which is located on the territory of the Czech capital in one of its historical areas - Hradchanakh. This Prague architectural monument belongs to the ancient monasteries of the Order of the Monarchs-Freelants. It was erected close to 1140-1143 thanks to Vladislav II, but the very idea of a majestic construction belongs to Jindrich Zdik, who belonged to the archdiocese of Olomouc.
As for the name of the monastery itself, that is, the statement that it is similar to the word « the guard ». This was the outpost located here, which protected approaches to the territory of Prague Castle.
The Stragovsky Monastery endlessly changed its appearance, there were constantly restructuring. From birth, the temple had a wooden look, but a little later strong stone fortifications were erected here, which had a Romanesque style. In 1258, the monastery was very damaged in a fire that occurred through the fault of a monk, which fell asleep with an unburned candle. A building resembling an earlytic style was built on the site of a monastery burned to the ground. Later, the construction repeatedly changed its appearance, but near the end of the 17th century the monastery acquired the form in which it is presented today. The history of the monastery is quite saturated and sad. Its location, almost at the very heart of the country, is conducive to participating in the most important historical events of those times. The Stragovsky Monastery could not get around the thirty-year war, as well as the Hussite wars. He was repeatedly attacked by the troops of the French as well as Russian armies. At the end of the 18th century, the monastery found itself at the threshold of closure, because the emperor created a decree in which it was about the closure of all monasteries that do not benefit society. At these times, the Stragovsky Monastery was saved by a publicly accessible library, which opened within its walls.
To date, the Stragov Monastery in Prague has a museum where domestic literature is located. There is also an excellent art gallery. The museum of miniatures is presented at the monastery’s show, there are wonderful restaurants, the hotel, surrounded by a magnificent garden.
