Nanwan Monkey Island
Nanwan Monkey Island is a unique nature reserve in China near Lingshui County, where monkeys are the main inhabitants dominating the island. It is believed that at least 2,000 monkeys live here. In addition to this interesting feature, the island is famous for its stunning sandy beach, coconut grove, coral reefs and the opportunity to fish directly in the sea on rafts. This is one of the popular destinations among tourists from different countries.
How to get to the island
A cable car takes visitors to Nanwan Monkey Island, another unforgettable amusement park experience. The cabins move at a speed of 6 meters per second, and the length of the entire path is just over 2 kilometers. Already during the trip, tourists can observe incredible landscapes, beaches with yellow sand and mountain peaks covered with greenery. It is possible to get to Nanwan Monkey Island by boat, but then the path will not be so picturesque. As soon as you get to the island, you are immediately greeted by macaques waving green flags, and the path goes deep into the dense green forest.
Monkey Paradise
The reserve was founded in 1965 and today about 2,000 macaques live here. They are the main inhabitants of the island and are carefully protected by the state. This is truly a paradise for them: the abundance of various fruits, the presence of grottoes of any size and depth, the rich nature have become an ideal home for macaques. And the most important thing is that the climate here is comfortable for them.
On the territory of Nanwan Monkey Island, everyone can use the services of a guide and learn more about life on the island. There is also the opportunity to feed the monkeys, but you need to be very careful: the macaques fight and can take away a bag or treat from visitors. However, they often behave peacefully and do not attack tourists. You can buy nuts and other treats for them in front of the cable car, at a small market.
Features of Nanwan Monkey Island
95% of the island is impenetrable jungle, but the rest is conveniently equipped for visitors. Macaques freely jump from a branch into a pool, somersault in the water and play with each other. Such observation of their ordinary life is in many ways more interesting than circus tricks. In addition to monkeys, other animals also live on the island. You can take a photo with parrots or ponies. And for an additional fee, a specially trained macaque will climb on your head for a colorful photo.
Other entertainment
Besides the monkeys, there is a lot to see and do. Nanwan Monkey Island is famous for its “sea streets” - these are small rafts on which you can visit a local restaurant where seafood is prepared on site, or go fishing. You can relax on the rafts, because they are designed in such a way that neither you will disturb the monkeys, nor they you. The beauty of this place is that it perfectly combines untouched wild nature and developed tourist infrastructure. There are also circus and theater performances that further lift your spirits. And in order to bring a piece of the island with them, tourists are offered to buy gifts in a souvenir shop along the way. It is recommended to come to Nanwan Monkey Island with the whole family.
