Christ the Redeemer

Christ the Redeemer is one of the world's most recognisable monuments and the defining symbol of Rio de Janeiro. The enormous statue of Jesus Christ with outstretched arms stands atop Corcovado Mountain, overlooking the city, Guanabara Bay, the Atlantic Ocean and surrounding peaks.

The monument is located in Tijuca National Park, about 710 metres above sea level. It was inaugurated on 12 October 1931. The figure is approximately 30 metres tall, reaching around 38 metres with its pedestal. The project was led by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa, with sculptural work by Paul Landowski.

History and architecture

The idea of placing a Christian monument on Corcovado was discussed in the 19th century, but the project took shape in 1921. Construction lasted from 1926 to 1931. The statue is associated with the Art Deco style. Its reinforced-concrete structure is covered with small pieces of pale soapstone.

Christ's outstretched arms symbolise peace, compassion, welcome and protection. Over time, the statue became both a religious monument and an international emblem of Rio and Brazil. In 2007, it was selected as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World through an international vote.

Corcovado Mountain and the views

The statue stands within Tijuca National Park. From the viewing area, visitors can see Guanabara Bay, Sugarloaf Mountain, the ocean, beaches and city neighbourhoods. The park protects sections of Atlantic Forest with diverse vegetation and wildlife.

The panorama depends on the weather. Low clouds and mist can obscure the city, while clear conditions reveal the striking contrast between green mountains, urban districts and the coastline.

How to get there

One of the best-known ways to reach the summit is the historic Trem do Corcovado railway. Trains depart from Cosme Velho Station and travel through the forest for about 20 minutes. Another option is an official tourist van from designated points around Rio. It is advisable to purchase tickets in advance through official channels.

Check current schedules, routes and access conditions before travelling. Maintenance work may temporarily affect some lifts, and part of the route may require using stairs.

Best time to visit

Rio can be visited throughout the year, but weather on Corcovado may differ from conditions near sea level. Summer, from December to March, is usually hot and humid, with possible showers and mist. Cooler months can be more comfortable for walking, although clear views are never guaranteed.

Practical tips

Book tickets in advance and check the forecast and transport departure time. Bring water, comfortable shoes and sun protection. It can be windy at the summit, so a light layer is useful. Follow safety rules and never climb over barriers for photographs. Visitors with reduced mobility should confirm lift and stair access before travelling.

Nearby attractions

After visiting the statue, explore Sugarloaf Mountain, walk along Copacabana or Ipanema beaches, visit the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden or discover other parts of Tijuca National Park.

Why visit Christ the Redeemer

Christ the Redeemer combines religious symbolism, 20th-century architecture and spectacular views of Rio de Janeiro. The trip to Corcovado offers a unique perspective on the city and shows how its urban landscape is intertwined with mountains, forest and ocean.
